Online Application Instructions

You are about to make your first step toward becoming a student at Southwest Minnesota State University. We are excited you have decided to apply for admission to our university. Completing the online application will take approximately 15 minutes.

1. All information entered on this application will be directly entered into our database. Please consider the following when completing the application:

a. Do not use all capital letters when entering information.
b. When entering your address, please enter all postal information including apartment number, directions (N, SW, E etc.).
c. Please include a current phone number with area code.
d. Questions with an orange dot are required fields, and if you inadvertently miss a question you will be prompted to complete that section before continuing to the next page of the application.

2. Please be sure to double-check your work as you complete each page of the application. You may want to print each page prior to continuing to the next.

3. You will be asked to complete the High School Preparation Standards for Minnesota’s State Universities page while applying online. If you are unable to accurately complete this page, leave the boxes blank. Check the Yes box at the bottom of the page and submit.

4. If you have applied to SMSU in the past, you do not need to apply again. Please contact the Office of Admission (507) 537-6286 or (800) 642-0684 to discuss enrolling at Southwest Minnesota State.

5. If you are an International Student, please use the International application found here.

6. SMSU requires you to supply ACT or SAT scores. If you have yet to submit your results, you may use the form found here to obtain and submit your test scores.

7. To obtain a copy of your high school transcripts or GED, you may download a copy of the Transcript Release Permission form.
Note: It is the responsibility of the student to provide SMSU with high school transcripts or proof of GED.

Transfer Students:
Transfer students must request official transcript(s) from each previously attended college or university to be mailed directly to:

You may also hand deliver your official transcripts in a sealed envelope  to the Office of Admission located in Founders Hall.
